Prime Alberta Morel Foraging Areas 2026

Alberta's Rocky Mountain foothills and recent burn zones provide excellent morel habitat. Focus on these key regions:

Jasper National Park Fire Areas

2024 Jasper wildfire created extensive burn morel habitat. Jasper is a national park, where collecting mushrooms is not allowed, so check where the park boundary sits before you go.

High Potential

Kananaskis Country Foothills

Mixed conifer-aspen forests with natural morel populations. Focus on south-facing slopes at 1200-1600m elevation.

Moderate Potential

Crowsnest Pass Area

Historic burn areas and cottonwood river bottoms. Accessible terrain with good spring moisture.

High Potential

Hinton-Edson Corridor

Foothills transition zone with lodgepole pine burns. Check recent wildfire maps for 2024-2025 burns.

Alberta Morel Foraging Tips

  • Collecting mushrooms is not allowed in Canada's national parks, including Banff and Jasper (National Parks General Regulations, s. 10)
  • Alberta's short season means timing is critical - watch soil temps closely as snowmelt progresses
  • Cottonwood river bottoms produce reliable natural morels even without fire history
  • Bear country awareness is essential - carry bear spray and make noise while foraging
  • Mountain weather changes rapidly - pack layers and rain gear for foothills foraging
  • Crown land (public land) is open for foraging outside parks - verify land status before harvesting
