Washington Morel Foraging Tips

  • Washington DNR and USFS require free personal use permits - check current requirements at ranger stations
  • Eastern WA burns are drier than west side - watch for spring rain events that trigger fruiting flushes
  • The Okanogan is morel country - extensive burns and remote access means less competition
  • Watch road conditions - many forest roads don't open until late April or May due to snow
  • Commercial picking requires separate permits and designated areas - personal limits typically 3 gallons/day
  • Colville NF is less crowded than Okanogan - good option for those seeking solitude
