There's a specific kind of disappointment in hiking back to a spot that produced for you before and finding nothing — not because the mushrooms never come back, but because you went on the wrong day. Most of that is fixable. A patch doesn't fruit on a whim. It fruits when the mycelium underground gets the signal to, and that signal is almost always weather, filtered through whatever's specific to that patch of ground. Learn to read both and you stop guessing.
This isn't a species-identification piece. It won't tell you what you're looking at once you get there — that's still yours to work out, in the field, with a field guide or an experienced forager alongside you. It's about deciding when to go back.
The Weather Signal: Rain Is Necessary, But the Wrong Kind Doesn't Count
Mycelium needs moisture to reach deep into the soil before it fruits. A ten-minute drizzle wets the leaf litter and evaporates by afternoon — it doesn't do anything for a mushroom a few inches underground. What triggers a flush is a soaking rain: enough to actually saturate the ground, not just the surface.
Once that rain happens, the clock starts, and different species run it at different speeds. This is genuinely useful as a rough guide, not a promise:
- Fast movers (2–5 days): morels, oyster mushrooms — species that can go from nothing to full-sized in under a week.
- Middle speed (3–7 days): porcini and other king boletes, most field mushrooms.
- Slow movers (5–14+ days): chanterelles and other mycorrhizal species that take longer to commit to a full fruiting body.
Temperature sets which species that rain triggers, not just when. Most edible forest species prefer roughly 50–75°F. But the direction of the swing matters as much as the number: a warm summer rain tends to trigger chanterelles and chicken of the woods, while a cold snap in early autumn is what "cold-shocks" porcini and other boletes into fruiting — the same rain in July and in October is doing different jobs.
None of that is exotic information — there are calculators online that will take a rain date and a species and spit out a harvest window. What they mostly can't tell you is the other half of the question: this spot, not "porcini" in general.
The Habitat Signal: Why Some Spots Come Back and Others Don't
A patch that flushed hard last month doesn't automatically flush again after the next rain. The mycelium put a lot into that first fruiting and may genuinely need time to recover before it can do it again — which is a different problem than "wrong weather," and weather alone won't explain it.
This is where knowing the specific spot beats knowing the species. Hen of the woods (maitake) is the clearest example live right now: it's well known among foragers for returning to the base of the same oak, often for years running, because the mycelium is anchored to that one tree's root system rather than spread loosely through the leaf litter. A generic "hen of the woods season" window tells you the month. Knowing that a specific oak base produced two Septembers running tells you where to actually walk first this year, weather permitting.
That kind of pattern only shows up if you were tracking the spot, not just the species, the last time it happened. Which is really the whole argument: a rain calculator can tell you a species is probably up somewhere nearby. Only your own record of a specific spot — what came up there, and when, the last few times — can tell you whether this spot is worth the hike this week.
Terrain changes the timing too

Building the Record, Without a Proprietary Model
I don't have a weather-scoring algorithm and wouldn't trust one that claimed more precision than the biology supports. What I'd actually track, spot by spot, is plain and boring on purpose:
- The date of the last soaking rain near that spot, and how many days it's been.
- Roughly what the temperature's done since — a warm stretch, a cold snap, steady.
- What came up there last time, and how many days after rain it showed.
- Whether it fruited again later the same season, or went quiet for the rest of the year.
A season or two of that, kept per spot rather than per species, starts answering the actual question — not "is it mushroom season," but "is this patch, specifically, due." That's the whole reason logging a find matters beyond the photo: the date and the spot are the data, and they're only useful if you didn't have to remember them. The app logs both the moment you pin a find, whether or not you've got signal out there, so the record builds itself instead of living in a notebook that gets left at home or a memory that fades by next August.
What This Doesn't Tell You
Timing gets you to the right patch on the right week. It doesn't identify anything once you're standing in front of it. A spot producing on schedule doesn't mean what's fruiting this time is the same species that fruited there last time — confirm every find yourself, the same way you always would, before it goes anywhere near a plate. Weather and habit are about when to look. They were never about what you're looking at.
