How to Identify Rocky Mountain King Bolete

EDIBLE: Red-capped Bolete is a good edible with firm texture and mild flavor, though not as highly prized as B. edulis. The bright red cap and association with oaks in warm climates are distinctive features. Cook thoroughly before eating. Some people may experience mild digestive upset.

Description

The Red-capped Bolete features a distinctive red to rose-red cap (7-20 cm) with smooth to slightly wrinkled surface. Pores are yellow from young age, aging to olive-yellow, with no bruising or slight yellowing. The yellow to pale yellow stem displays yellow reticulation and may show reddish tones toward base. Yellow flesh does not change color when cut or shows minimal yellowing. Spore print is olive-brown.

Habitat & Distribution

Habitat: Mycorrhizal with hardwoods, particularly oak and sometimes chestnut, in mixed deciduous forests. Prefers warm climates and well-drained soils. Found in oak woodlands and riparian areas.

Seasonality

Summer through fall (July-October) with peak fruiting in August-September. Fruits during warm, humid weather following rainfall.
