✅ Edibility Note

EDIBLE: Considered edible and safe when young and fresh, but the small size makes collection tedious. The flavor is mild and unremarkable. No alcohol interaction like Coprinopsis atramentaria. Must be used immediately as gills deliquesce quickly. Only collect young fresh specimens. The small size and rapid deliquescence make it impractical for most foragers. Safe with no toxic lookalikes. The mica-like sparkles when young are diagnostic and charming. Often abundant but not worth the effort to collect. The species is more interesting ecologically than culinarily.

Description

Mica Cap or Glistening Inky Cap is a small delicate mushroom 2-6 cm tall with a cap 1-4 cm across. The cap is oval to bell-shaped, tan to yellow-brown or reddish-brown with distinctive glistening mica-like particles on the surface when young (diagnostic feature - particles wash off with rain). The cap has radial grooves from margin partway to center. The gills are adnate, white becoming gray then black and deliquescing. The stem is 3-7 cm tall, smooth, white, fragile, hollow. Fruits in dense clusters.
