Description

Green-cracking Russula has green cap (5-12 cm) with distinctive CRACKED or CHECKERED pattern exposing white flesh beneath - very characteristic. Gills white. Stem white, firm. KEY: GREEN CRACKED CAP, BRITTLE FLESH, NO LATEX, MILD TASTE. Flesh white. Spore print white.

Habitat & Distribution

Habitat: Mycorrhizal with hardwoods, especially oak, beech, chestnut. Grows on ground in deciduous forests. European species. Scattered or groups.

Region: Europe, Eastern US (possibly introduced)

Seasonality

Summer through fall (July-September).
