Alberta's Rocky Mountain foothills and recent burn zones provide excellent morel habitat. Focus on these key regions:
2024 Jasper wildfire created extensive burn morel habitat. Check Parks Canada regulations for foraging permits.
High PotentialMixed conifer-aspen forests with natural morel populations. Focus on south-facing slopes at 1200-1600m elevation.
Moderate PotentialHistoric burn areas and cottonwood river bottoms. Accessible terrain with good spring moisture.
High PotentialFoothills transition zone with lodgepole pine burns. Check recent wildfire maps for 2024-2025 burns.
Moderate PotentialLower foothills and river valleys begin producing. Cottonwood bottoms near Calgary and Lethbridge. Elevation under 1200m.
Peak season for mid-elevation foothills. Kananaskis, Crowsnest, and southern Rockies burns become active. 1200-1500m elevation.
