Burn morels (fire morels) fruit prolifically in the spring following a forest fire. These zones from recent fires will be prime foraging areas in 2026:
12,000+ hectares burned August 2023. Second-year morels expected with good conditions.
High PotentialLargest fire in BC history at 500,000+ hectares. Remote but potentially massive morel production.
High PotentialSignificant 2023 burn near Scotch Creek. Accessible and likely productive.
Moderate PotentialFirst-year post-fire morels often less productive than second-year. Scout these areas but focus on 2023 burns.
VariableLow elevation valleys (under 500m) start producing. Southern Okanagan, Fraser Valley edges. Landscape morels in non-burned areas.
Peak season for low-to-mid elevations. Burn areas in Okanagan and Thompson regions become active. 500-1000m elevation zones.
Mid-elevation burns peak. Kootenays, Cariboo, and northern Interior come online. 1000-1500m elevation zones.
High elevation areas and northern regions. Last morels found above 1500m and in far northern BC burn areas.
